Critical Thinking

The First Story Is Incomplete

“The first person to speak seems right until another comes forward and asks questions.”

Proverbs 18:17

The first explanation often settles quickly in the mind. It gives the event a villain, a cause, and a meaning. Once that story feels complete, new information can sound like interference. Proverbs warns us that the first account may seem convincing until another perspective is heard.

A person can speak sincerely and still see only part of what happened. Memory is limited. Emotion highlights certain details. Loyalty and fear can shape interpretation. Critical thinking makes room for those human limits without assuming dishonesty.

This wisdom also applies to the stories we tell ourselves. 'They do not care.' 'I always fail.' 'Nothing will change.' These conclusions may begin with something painful and real, then stretch beyond the evidence. A wise person asks what facts support the story, what facts complicate it, and whose voice has not been heard.

Seeking another perspective is an act of stewardship. Decisions affect people, relationships, and direction. Give the story enough room to become more complete before you let it choose your response.

Practice This Week

Write the story you currently believe about one situation. Divide a page into three parts: facts you know, meanings you have assigned, and information still missing. Identify one trustworthy perspective that could help fill the gap.
